Dear parents and carers,
Welcome to the second half of the summer term.
I hope you have all had a fantastic and well deserved break. I can't quite believe that we have only 7 more weeks left until the end of Year 1. I would just like to say how proud I am of each and every one of my pupil's, you have all made outstanding progress.
Our topic this term is called ‘Weather Watchers'. In this topic we will be learning about the four seasons - seasonal change. In Science we will be finding out about the seasons and how they are different. In Geography we will be keeping a record journal of the weather in Hyde and looking at how the patterns change in time. We will discuss how the weather might be different in inland/coastal areas. We will be getting creative in Design and Technology by designing and making a variety of outfits for travelling Ted - one for each season.
In English we will be continuing to read our story 'Olga Da Polga'. As we have already created amazing fact-files, character descriptions, comparisons with characters and written in character role, we will now be moving onto creating our own stories- How the Guinea Pig lost his tail. We will be making excellent use of our writing rubrics, paired writing and peer critique skills to ensure we produce excellent stories for you to enjoy.
In Maths we will be starting our new unit on position and direction. We will take part in lots of practical work and work efficiently with our table groups and talk partners. We will be using our Power Maths books to further our knowledge in this unit. We will also be taking part in TT Rockstars sessions every Wednesday which will allow us to practice our 2's, 3's, 5's and 10's times tables.
As we have our phonics check screening this week (10/06/2019) we will be taking part in lots of fun phonics games. Children will be able to choose from a range of activities which will help them practice their phonemes, graphemes and real/nonsense words. Good luck year 1 - you will all be amazing!
Please could you remember to send your child's reading book and record book to school every day: we have an individual reading session every day and your child's book needs to be available. Whenever your child reads to us we will check their record book so please do fill it in every time- this needs to be signed and dated at least three times per week. In addition to individual reading, every child participates in guided reading activities every day and reading activities in the daily English lesson.
Spellings will be sent home once a week with homework - every Friday. Please support your child to learn the new words ready for their spelling test which will take place the following Friday. This will allow the children a full week to practice them. They are all words we use every day at school and their practice shows in their writing. Homework will also be sent home every Friday which consists spellings, TT Rock Stars and reading.
Our PE days are Thursday and Friday, and this half term we are practicing a variety fo throwing, catching and teamwork activities. PE kit consists of white t-shirt, black shorts and black slip-on or Velcro pumps. We will keep the PE kits in school and return them for washing each last day of term. If your child wears earrings, please ensure they are removed on PE days, and please ensure all long hair is tied back every day.
If your child has an inhaler, please ensure that we have one in school and that you have provided us with details of the dosage and when it is needed. If your child has any allergies, food intolerances etc. Please ensure that you have completed and returned the Medical Information form with full details.
The rewards system that has been introduced in Year 1 is Class Dojo. This is a rewards system that allows children to work hard to earn points individually, as well as team points and Gold Stars. This is also a good opportunity to email regarding any issues/concerns you may have, as the DOJO will be used continuously throughout the day, allowing me to respond quickly.
Please keep checking in and adding your encouragement.
Thank you for your co-operation.
