Autumn 1

Dear parents and carers,

Welcome to the first half of the Autumn Term in Year 1.

My name is Miss Wellburn and I will be teaching you this year. I am looking forward to getting to know all of you and making your learning at Endeavour interesting and fun!

Our topic this term is called ‘Here and There’. In this topic we will be learning all about human and animal bodies in Science. We will also be looking into life in Kenya later on in the half term. We will be practicing using atlases and reading maps as well as learning the seven continents and five oceans. We’ll also be learning about Kenya and the life of the Massai in Africa. It will all be very exciting and will even include some African drumming!

Please would you remember to send your child's reading book and record book to school every day: we have an individual reading session every day and your child's book needs to be available. Whenever your child reads to us we will check their record book so please do fill it in every time. If your child reads with you four or more times in one week they can choose a prize next time their book is checked. In addition to individual reading, every child participates in guided reading activities every day and reading activities in the daily English lesson.

Spellings will be sent home once a week with homework - every Friday. Please support your child to learn the new words ready for their spelling test which will take place the following Friday. This will allow the children a full week to practice them. They are all words we use every day at school and their practice shows in their writing. Homework will also be sent home every Friday which consists of English and Mathematics. Again, this work links directly to what we are learning in school and really helps to speed up their progress. Children will also be set a weekly 5 minute challenge on their 2 times tables.

Our PE days are Thursday and Friday, and this half term we are learning Rugby and Hockey. PE kit consists of white t-shirt, black shorts and black slip-on or Velcro pumps. We will keep the PE kits in school and return them for washing each last day of term. If your child wears earrings, please ensure they are removed on PE days, and please ensure all long hair is tied back every day. Just a reminder that all bobbles for school must be plain and no bows must be worn. If your child wears tights, they will need a pair of socks in their PE kit.

If your child has an inhaler, please ensure that we have one in school and that you have provided us with details of the dosage and when it is needed. If your child has any allergies, food intolerances etc. Please ensure that you have completed and returned the Medical Information form with full details.

The rewards system that has been introduced in Year 1 is Class Dojo. This is a rewards system that allows children to work hard to earn points individually, as well as team points and Gold Stars. Letters will be sent home and should be returned with a valid email address which will allow you to connect with myself, view your child’s profile, and keep up to date with their day to day work and achievements at school. This is also a good opportunity to email regarding any issues/concerns you may have, as the DOJO will be used continuously throughout the day, allowing me to respond quickly.

Please keep checking in and adding your encouragement.

Thank you for your co-operation, I look forward to meeting you all!

Best wishes,

Miss Wellburn

English

In English we are using a beautiful book ‘The Robot and the Bluebird’ ,to introduce the children to the ideas of the importance of understanding feelings and looking after others. The children will consider the different things they can do to ensure their friends are looked after and understand the importance of being kind and thoughtful towards others.

Maths

We are working on sorting different groups. We have sorted a variety of objects into different groups by size, shape, colour and by objects. We have been very bust practicing our number bonds to 10 using the numicon, cubes and counters to help us. We have now started to practice our 2 times tables – these will also be set for homework on their Times Table Rockstars account so please continue to support your child in completing this weekly.

Year 1 - useful websites

These websites will help you support your child's learning at home.

This website is good for supporting science and this particular page focuses on our topic of Materials:
