Year 1. Saplings

Autumn - Term 1

Autumn - Term 1 1
London's Burning!

Autumn 1

Dear parents, carers and children

Welcome to the first term of year 1!

I hope you have all had a fantastic and well deserved Summer break. I am Miss Wellburn and will be your child's class Teacher this year. I look forward to meeting you and teaching your child lots of fun and amazing things.

Our topic this term is called ‘London's Burning. In this topic we will be learning about the Great Fire of London and how it started. In History we will be looking at how London was different in 1666 compared to now and how the Great Fire of London started. We will also be taking a peek into Samuel Pepys diary! In Geography we will be looking at where London is on a map and we will be working on our locational knowledge and be using globes, maps and atlases. We will be getting creative in Design and Technology by designing and making our very own moving story board all about the Great fire of London. We can't wait to show them to you once they are finished.

English:

In English for the first few weeks we will be practicing forming our letters correctly and using capital letters, finger spaces and full stops. Our book for this term is called 'The Adventures of the Egg Box Dragon'. This is a lovely story which the children will enjoy and will have the opportunity to take on character role, use lots of peer critique skills whilst creating our very own Egg Box Dragons and also be learning how to create a set of instructions. We will start using our peer critique as soon as we start our story as this allows children the opportunity to give good feedback and advice to their peers.

Be kind. Be specific. Be helpful.

Maths:

In Maths we will be working on our number bonds to 10. Our first unit is 'numbers within 10' which will allow your child the opportunity to recognise numbers to 10, make 10 with two different numbers and be able to count forwards and backwards within 10. We will be practicing using number lines, cubes, counters, tens frames and tens and ones.

Phonics:

Phonics is a very important part of your child's learning and it is so important that your child reads their reading book at home every night. Phonics sessions take place every afternoon and they consist of twenty minutes learning a new sound each day. Your child will then have the opportunity to practice and apply this sound written and verbally. Phonics not only helps your child be able to read but also benefits their writing.

Please could you remember to send your child's reading book and record book to school EVERY DAY: we have an individual reading session every day and your child's book needs to be available. Whenever your child reads to us we will check their record book so please do fill it in every time- this needs to be signed and dated at least three times per week. In addition to individual reading, every child participates in guided reading activities every day and reading activities in the daily English lesson.

Spellings will be sent home once a week with homework - every Friday. Please support your child to learn the new words ready for their spelling test which will take place the following Friday. This will allow the children a full week to practice them. They are all words we use every day at school and their practice shows in their writing. Homework will also be sent home every Friday which consists spellings, TT Rock Stars and reading.

Our PE days are Thursday and Friday, and this half term we will be practicing catching and throwing. PE kit consists of white t-shirt, black shorts and black slip-on or Velcro pumps. We will keep the PE kits in school and return them for washing each last day of term. If your child wears earrings, please ensure they are removed on PE days, and please ensure all long hair is tied back every day.

If your child has an inhaler, please ensure that we have one in school and that you have provided us with details of the dosage and when it is needed. If your child has any allergies, food intolerances etc. Please ensure that you have completed and returned the Medical Information form with full details.

The rewards system that has been introduced in Year 1 is Class Dojo. This is a rewards system that allows children to work hard to earn points individually, as well as team points and Gold Stars. This is also a good opportunity to email regarding any issues/concerns you may have, as the DOJO will be used continuously throughout the day, allowing me to respond quickly.

Please keep checking in and adding your encouragement.

Thank you for your co-operation.

Best wishes,

Miss Wellburn x
