Year 4 (Willow)

Welcome to Year 4 – Willow

Teacher: Ms. Crofts

Teaching Assistant: Miss Tetlow

Here you will find everything you need to know about your child's journey through Year 4, including;  upcoming diary dates, homework schedule, and details of your child's learning.

In English we will be looking at the book ‘The Miraculous journey of Edward Tulane' by International Bestselling Author Kate Dicamillo. This is a short but interesting book. We don’t want to give you anymore information as we don’t want to spoil the activities we have planned.

Maths: This half term we will be focussing on arithmetic (mental and reasoning),  word problems and recapping, Time (standard analogue clocks and 24 hour digital clocks), money problems, multiplication/division and measurement including capacity. Once again, it would be helpful if you could work at home with your child checking their understanding of time as many are still finding this difficult.

144 challenge

As well as Time Table Rock Stars, we are also continuing the 144 challenge. The children are given 4 minutes to try and answer 144 times table questions. We will send home their test each week so you can monitor how they are doing. We would be grateful if you checked each week that your child has competed the challenges set.

Our topic this term is called Rivers! In this topic we will be learning about different types of rivers, stream, channels etc.

We will also be looking at evaporation, condensation, precipitation.

We will be vising a local river on Tuesday 3rd July. More details will follow nearer the time. But in the meantime, make a note of the date. The trip will take place during the school working hours.

It is incredibly important that children read at home everyday. Please read with your child and sign the reading record. Both reading record and reading book need to be in school every day. Pupil should be reading at least one book per fortnight to meet Age Related Expectations.

By the end of Year 4, all children will be expected to be able to spell all of the common exception words set by the government. 6 of these spellings will go home each week to be learnt as part of the homework.

The spelling test will be on Tuesdays and new spellings will also be given out on Thursday as part of their homework.

Homework is now given out on Thursday and is due in the following Wednesday.

Homework will still consist of 6 spellings, writing 4/5 sentences, 3 reading sessions at home, Maths and  questions and a game on Times Table Rock Stars.

Failure to do all of these each week will mean it will be completed at Breaktime/lunch time.

P.E. is on Wednesdays and the children need to wear black shorts, white t-shirt and black pumps. This half term, Mr Baugh, the sports coach, will be teaching Athletics.

Please make sure PE kits are in school at the start of the half term and stay in until the half term break.

Swimming: Will remain every Thursday morning. Please remember that this is part of the National Curriculum and every child must take part on a weekly basis.

Polite reminder: Please stay mindful of the start time of school 8.50. We are still having lots of late marks in the register and children are missing out on vital learning time. This also impacts of other pupils within the class.

Uniform: Please ensure that your child wears the correct school uniform at all times. It would also assist us if you could clearly label all clothing items too including P.E. kits and swimming kits. Full details of our uniform policy can be found on this website. Many thanks for your assistance on this matter.
